Roller Derby Scoring Points

Roller Derby is a full contact sport played on quad style roller skates. Two 15-skater teams play two 30-minute periods. There are 5 skaters from each team on the track at the same time. 4 of the skaters on the track make up the pack which consist of 3 blockers and a pivot. The 5th skater is the jammer, and they are the only one who can score points. Each period consists of multiple jams and each jam ends after 2 minutes or when the Lead Jammer calls it off. It is legal for blockers to use to hips, butts, and shoulders to try and stop a jammer. It is also legal for the jammer to use hips, butt, and shoulders to try and get through the pack.

When the whistle blows, both jammers take off and begin to fight their way through the opposing team’s pack. The first jammer to emerge is labeled Lead Jammer and now has the power to call off the jam if they choose. On the second pass through the pack, the jammer is now scoring points. The jammer gets one point per pair of hips they pass from the opposing team.
